What is homecare?
Homecare is caring support provided in the comfort and familiarity of your own home. It is there to help you continue living safely, confidently and independently, while receiving a little extra help where you need it.
For many people, home is where they feel happiest and most at ease. Homecare services are designed to support you in staying there for as long as possible, with dignity and peace of mind.
When might I consider homecare?
You might think about homecare if everyday tasks are becoming more tiring, difficult or worrying than they used to be. Asking for help is not a sign of losing independence — in fact, it can be a positive step towards keeping it.
There are many different types of support available, depending on what would make life easier for you. This may include:
Gentle support with personal care, such as getting in and out of bed, washing, dressing or using the toilet
Help around the home, including cleaning, laundry and preparing meals
Arranging helpful equipment or adaptations, such as handrails or stairlifts
Support to attend a local day centre or community activities
Some people need homecare for a short while — perhaps after a stay in hospital, while regaining strength and confidence. Others choose longer-term support to help them continue living comfortably and independently in their own home.
Paying for homecare
You may be able to receive help from your local council to arrange and contribute towards the cost of care. Some people prefer to organise their own care privately and cover the costs themselves. The right option will depend on your personal circumstances.
How do I get help from my local council?
The first step is to ask your local council for a care needs assessment. This is a friendly conversation about what you’re finding difficult and what support might help.
You are entitled to this assessment regardless of your income or savings, and there should be no charge for it.
If you’re unsure about anything, remember — you are not alone. Reaching out for advice and support can make a real difference, and there are people ready to help you every step of the way.
